New Entrant Starting School – Our Transition to School Programme

We have a wonderful transition to school programme for our new entrants at Diamond Harbour School, co-ordinated by Phillipa Fenemor our Deputy Principal and Karen Steedman the Yr 0-1 homeroom teacher, in conjunction with Diamond Harbour Kidfirst Kindy. We suggest making sure your enrollment is complete roughly four weeks before your child starts.

Focussing on our school value of Whanaungatanga we work hard to ensure children feel comfortable and welcome in the school environment by the time they start as a 5-year-old. We do this by delivering a year-long transition process in environments where the children are most comfortable:

  • Weekly class visits: (These are currently not happening due to regulations about COVID-19) Around the time of their 4th birthday, they will commence weekly Kindy group visits to Te Kōhanga (our Yr 0-2) classroom. On these hour-long visits, children are accompanied by their kindy teachers along with a few parents. The purpose of these visits is to accustom children to the classroom, the routines, their new teachers and their future classmates.
  • Weekly visits from school: Our Year Ones (COVID-19 restrictions permitting) also visit Kindy once a week to read to the children there, accompanied by Phillipa. Here the children get a chance to form friendships with the current Year Ones and Phillipa can learn more about them.
  •  4 3/4 yrs catch up: Around when your child turns 4 3/4, you will be invited to an information meeting to discuss more about the next part of your child’s transition to school. This is your opportunity as a parent, to ask any burning questions that you may have, about your child starting school.
  • Final visits: The final visits that your child will be offered are visits with just a parent and then solo, a few weeks before they turn five. You will be given an enrollment pack on these visits with paperwork to complete and return before your child starts. You can alternatively make an online enrolment application.

Buddies

Each New Entrant, Year One and Year Two child is given a big buddy from the Senior classrooms. Their buddy will pop along on transition to school visits in Te Kōhanga and support children through their solo school visits. Throughout the year, our wonderful big buddies will help Te Kōhanga children with their reading mileage and other classroom learning.

Transferring / Starting School for older students

As above please contact us as soon as possible if your child will be transferring from another school so we can make the transition as smooth as possible.

Stationery

All of our classroom stationery is purchased online through Office Max. The link to purchase stationery can be found here. For New Entrants, please ask Phillipa or Karen S for a stationery list before your child starts their final school visits as the list can change, depending on when in the school year they start.

Uniform

We have a very smart school uniform that is optional. It can be purchased online or from the NZ uniform shop at 455 Blenheim Road, Sockburn.
