Please enrol your child well before their starting day.  For new entrants, we encourage you to enrol your child once they have turned 4 years old. Children may begin school the day they turn 5 or any day afterwards.  It is a Ministry of Education requirement that children are enrolled at a primary school once they turn 6 years old.

We also invite you to make an appointment to meet with the Principal and Ariki Team.

We welcome you into the Riverdale School office to collect your child’s Pre-Enrolment Pack.  This can be completed and returned to us along with the required documents as stated in the pack. We look forward to meeting you.
If you are unable to come into the school office please email: office@riverdale.school.nz and we can send you an Pre-Enrolment Pack.

Riverdale School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office.

The Riverdale School Board of Trustees will determine how places are likely to be available for out-of-zone students this year.

The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone.

If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required it will be held on the day stated below. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Applications for out of zone will be processed in the following order of priority –

  1. ORS students depending on space (determined by staffing levels for ORS)
  2. Siblings of current students
  3. Siblings of former students
  4. Child of a former student at the school
  5. Child of an employee of Riverdale School or child of a Board of Trustees member
  6. All other applicants

We have four out-of-zone intakes per year.  Riverdale School Board of Trustees will determine how many out-of-zone spaces there will be for each intake.  The ballot dates for the coming year are as follows:

  • Enrolment Period: Term 3 2024 (22nd July – 27th September 2024)

Deadline for applications: 9th May 2024

Date of Ballot: 10 May 2024

Transition to School Visits

Children who are pre-enrolled at Riverdale School are invited to attend transition visits in their collaboration.  We will make contact by email four weeks before the first transition visit to provide information on the dates your child’s visit are. These sessions are designed to introduce your child to the school environment and routines, while also providing an opportunity for parents to ask questions, meet with Management and meet the teachers.

Visit One – Wednesday Afternoon (1:50pm – 2:50pm)

At this visit, we will settle your child into the classroom. This is a chance for you and your child to become familiar with our classroom “Piako Tahi”.

Visit Two – Wednesday Afternoon (1:50pm – 2:50pm)

At this visit we will settle your child into the classroom and then you will meet with the management team to chat about our school.

Visit Three – Thursday Morning (8.45am – 11.00am)

At this final visit you can leave your child in the classroom and come back to pick them up at 11.00am. Can your child please bring a school bag with a drink bottle and a healthy snack. On this day, if you require another meeting with a member of the management team, please make an appointment at the school office.

Meet the Teachers – Thursday afternoon (3.30pm – 4.45pm)

A pre-booked time slot is available for you and your family to meet with the classroom teachers. We encourage all our families to make this possible as it is a great time to share more about your child, find out about Piako Tahi (our classroom) and answer any questions you may have. This appointment is to be booked with the school office on your first transition visit.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us, we are looking forward to meeting you and your child on the first visit and being part of their learning journey here at Riverdale School.

  • Talk with your child about starting school and be positive.
  • Bring them after school/weekends to have a look around and play on the playground.
  • Ensure children are at school and settled at least 10 minutes before the bell goes at 8:55 am.  Children can arrive at school anytime from 8:30 am onwards.  It can be unsettling for children if you are late or arriving on the bell.
  • If you are intending to buy a school bag, please ensure it is big enough to hold a lunch box, drink bottle, reading bag, library book and polar fleece.
  • Encourage your child to be responsible for themselves by letting them do their own jobs in the morning (carrying their school bag, hanging it up on the hook and unpacking it)
  • Help your child learn how to put on their socks and shoes as well as take on/off their school jersey.
  • Ensure that your child can toilet themselves.
  • Talk with the teacher about any concerns you or your child may have.
